Every once in a while, you build something that feels bigger than a class project. Someone Today is that project for me — a peer support web application designed to create meaningful human connections when people need them most.
Today, I’m excited to announce that Someone Today is officially live.
What Is Someone Today?
Someone Today is a peer support web app built to connect people who need someone to talk to with people who are ready to listen. It’s not therapy. It’s not a crisis hotline. It’s the space in between — where everyday struggles meet genuine empathy from real people who understand what you’re going through.
The idea came from a simple observation: sometimes you don’t need a professional diagnosis or a clinical session. Sometimes you just need someone — today. Someone who gets it. Someone who’s been there. That’s exactly what this platform provides.
Why I Built This
As a Computer Science senior at Texas A&M University – Texarkana, I’ve seen firsthand how isolating college life can be. Students deal with academic pressure, loneliness, imposter syndrome, and the weight of figuring out their futures — often in silence. Mental health resources exist, but the gap between “I’m struggling” and “I booked a therapist appointment” can feel enormous.
I wanted to build something that fills that gap. Something accessible, immediate, and human. No waitlists. No insurance forms. Just people supporting people.
What You’ll Find Inside the App
When you open Someone Today, here’s what’s waiting for you:
- Peer Matching — Connect with someone who shares similar experiences or is ready to lend an ear. The platform matches you with peers based on what you’re going through.
- Real-Time Conversations — No bots. No automated responses. Just genuine, real-time conversations with real people who care.
- Safe & Supportive Environment — The platform is designed with safety at its core. Community guidelines ensure every interaction remains respectful, supportive, and constructive.
- Resource Hub — Access curated mental wellness resources, coping strategies, and links to professional help when you need to take the next step.
- Anonymous Support — Share what’s on your mind without the pressure of revealing your identity. Sometimes anonymity is what makes honesty possible.
The Tech Behind It
For the developers and tech enthusiasts reading this — Someone Today is built with a modern web stack designed for real-time performance and scalability. The app leverages technologies like React for a responsive front-end experience, Node.js for backend services, and real-time communication protocols to ensure conversations flow without lag or interruption.
Every architectural decision was made with the user in mind: fast load times, intuitive navigation, and a clean interface that gets out of the way so the human connection can take center stage.
A Personal Note
Building Someone Today has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my journey as a developer. Code can do a lot of things — automate tasks, process data, render beautiful interfaces. But when code helps someone feel less alone on a hard day, that’s when it truly matters.
This app is my answer to a question I’ve been asking myself throughout college: How can I use what I’m learning to make a real difference?
Someone Today is live now. If you or someone you know could use a little support, check it out. And if you’re someone who wants to be there for others — we need you too.
Be someone’s someone — today.
